Calculate vacation pay: With this formula it works
Calculating vacation pay online is often difficult. You can easily calculate the amount of additional income yourself with a few formulas. Find out how the calculation works here.
Calculate vacation pay: That's how much money you get
The calculation of vacation pay depends on several factors. This doesn't just include your salary or wages.
- Weekly working hours and days also play a role. It makes a difference whether you work five or six days a week.
- It is also decisive for the calculation whether you receive weekly or monthly wages. We show you the calculation for the individual models.
- For a better illustration, we assume a weekly wage of 1, 000 euros or a monthly wage of 3, 000 euros and 24 working days of statutory vacation.
Vacation pay: weekly wages and six working days
If an employee with a weekly wage of 1, 000 euros and a six-day week takes his entire 24 days of statutory vacation, the vacation allowance paid by the employer is calculated using the following formula:
- (13 × 1, 000 euros weekly wages): (13 × 6 working days) × 24 vacation days = 4, 000 euros vacation pay
- The number 13 in the formula results from the fact that the last 13 working weeks before the start of the holiday are used for the calculation.
Vacation pay: weekly wages and five working days
Let's take the same factors as in the previous example, with the difference that the worker only works five days a week. Then the working days to be taken into account are reduced in the formula, but this is offset by the lower number of days of vacation to be specified. The result would be the same, but the formula changes.
- (13 × 1, 000 euros weekly wages): (13 × 5 working days) × 20 vacation days = 4, 000 euros vacation pay
Vacation pay: monthly wages and six working days
Let us now assume that a monthly salary of EUR 3, 000 has been agreed. The working time is six days a week. The calculation of the vacation allowance is now generally estimated at 26 working days (= working days). It doesn't matter how many working days the month you take vacation actually has. Your monthly salary is reduced to one working day and this amount is then multiplied by the number of vacation days.
- 3, 000 euros monthly salary: (26 working days × 24 vacation days) = 2, 769.23 euros vacation pay
Vacation pay: monthly wages and five working days
As an employee with a 5-day week, you have to assume a flat rate of 22 working days per month and down the 24 vacation days to 20. The formula is:
- 3, 000 euros monthly salary: (22 working days × 20 vacation days) = 2, 727.27 euros vacation pay
Time of payment of the vacation bonus
If you have calculated your vacation bonus based on the formulas, you would also like to know when it will be paid out.
- When you receive your holiday pay is specified in your employment contract or in the collective agreement.
- Christmas bonuses are usually paid in December with the wages for November. In some cases, payments are made in November.
- The holiday allowance usually comes six months after the Christmas bonus, i.e. in June or possibly in July - in good time before the holiday season.
- Some employers link the payment of the vacation allowance to the condition that the employee must have used at least half of the vacation days to which he is entitled by the time of payment. It is therefore worth taking a look at the employment contract.
The holiday allowance depends, among other things, on your salary. If you want a grant for your vacation, you should ask for a raise. You can find out when the best time is for this in our next article.
