Retrofitting USB 3.0 on a notebook - is that possible?
In this practical tip, we clarify the question of whether you can retrofit USB 3.0 on the notebook.
Notebook: Retrofit USB 3.0 - so it'll work
If you want to retrofit USB 3.0 on the notebook, you need the following hardware:
- The new USB Standard 3.0 enables faster transfers from the end device to the PC and vice versa.
- In this way, data can be transferred at up to 500 MB per second - provided the USB connection and the cable belong to the 3rd generation.
- Unfortunately, not all PCs or even notebooks have a USB 3.0 port. With PCs, this can be easily retrofitted via PCI.
- This is also possible with a laptop or notebook. For this you need a so-called ExpressCard.
- You can then slide this into the matching ExpressCard slot on your notebook on the left. It is recognized automatically. This also automatically installs drivers and software.
- Unfortunately, such a shaft is only available on older models. If you do not have such a slot, you can unfortunately not upgrade your notebook to USB 3.0.
