Retrofit USB 3.0 port on the computer - how it works
You can retrofit a USB 3.0 port on most computers. We show you what to consider when buying and installing.
Requirements for retrofitting USB 3.0 connections
This practical tip only applies to desktop computers. Retrofitting is also possible for laptops, but usually a specialist has to do it.
- MainBoard: Your motherboard should support the PCI Express 2.0 standard. Most computers built in or after 2008 already support this standard. If your computer is relatively new, you don't have to worry about this.
- Card: The new USB 3.0 controller should also support PCI-Express 2.0. This is the only way to use the full speed of 500 MB / s.
- Price: A USB 3.0 controller is available for about 10 to 20 euros from various providers on Amazon.
- Purchase: There are controllers with 2 and 4 connections. Many computers can only have two ports, so make sure that the card is compatible before purchasing.

When removing and installing, make sure not to scratch any components. Even a small slip with a screwdriver can cause irreparable damage.
- Turn off your computer and remove the power cable. Then unscrew the cover.
- Find the old USB 2.0 controller and carefully remove the attached screws. Also loosen the plug connection.
- Now you can install the new card as you have removed the old one and close the PC again.
