USB 3.0 port is not working - you can do that
If a USB 3.0 port does not work in your PC or laptop, this can have a variety of causes. We show you how to fix all conceivable software and hardware errors.
USB 3.0 does not work: Install or update the driver
Often the problem is an outdated driver. The first thing you should try is to update the driver.
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "devmgmt.msc" here and confirm with "OK". Now the device manager starts.
- Select the "USB controller" below and look for the term "USB 3.0".
- Click on the entry with the right mouse button and select the option "Update driver software" (see picture).
- Let Windows automatically search for drivers and wait for the result.
- If no new driver was found, you can uninstall the USB controller by right-clicking and then reinstall it.
USB 3.0 port: Install the driver yourself
- If no update was found, you have to search for it yourself. For a desktop PC, go to the website of the mainboard manufacturer, for a laptop go to the website of the laptop manufacturer.
- Alternatively, you can leave the search to software. This works, for example, with Driver Booster Free.
- An outdated chipset driver can also cause the problem. In the following practical tip, we will show you how to update the chipset driver.
Activate USB 3.0 port in BIOS
- A look at the BIOS can also help. If the wrong settings are selected here, the USB 3.0 port is deactivated and cannot be used.
- Open the BIOS and look for the setting "XHCI hand-off". Set this option to "Enabled".
USB 3.0 port has stopped working: check the connector
- In some cases, the problem can also be with the hardware. The USB 3.0 port is rarely defective, often just the plug connection has come loose.
- To do this, disconnect the desktop PC and open it. Now look for blue plugs on the mainboard.
- Carefully pull the plugs out of their place with little pressure and as straight as possible. You can then connect the plugs correctly again.
