The new USB 4 is said to have significant improvements over the predecessor USB 3.2. For example, the new 4.0 universal interface has the Thunderbolt protocol. You can find out what else you should know in this practical tip.
USB 4 brings these innovations with it
Thunderbolt is an interface protocol developed jointly by Intel and Apple, which connects computers, monitors or other devices with external hard drives, video cameras or other electronic devices.
- With the Thunderbolt 3, SSD (memory cards), monitors or hard disks have always been connected to the computer via a socket.
- However, this technology has so far only been used for very expensive, well-equipped devices, since the license fees for Thunderbolt 3 were extremely expensive for the manufacturers.
- Now USB has adopted this super fast technology and integrated it into the new USB 4.
- Thanks to this Thunderbolt protocol, USB 4 is faster than ever. Data transfers can take place at 40 gigabits per second. USB 4 is twice as fast as its predecessor USB 3.2.
- USB also supports 4 different data and display protocols. With USB 4 you can cover a wider area of application and transmit data streams and signals for monitors.
- Furthermore, all devices should be able to use the new USB Power Delivery technology when using USB 4. This should make charging and control over it faster and better.
- For USB 4 you do not need a cable on your device, just the USB-C plug.
- However, it may take a while until the first devices that support USB 4 are available on the market. The target will be at the end of 2020.
In the next post we will explain how you can retrofit Thunderbolt on PC and Mac.
