USB stick shows insufficient memory - what to do?
If your PC shows you that your USB stick has too little memory, you can help yourself with a few simple tricks.
USB stick: Insufficient memory when copying
If your PC complains that the USB stick does not have enough storage space, although there is evidence that there is enough space, you may copy a file that is too large for older formats. This is mostly the case when you want to copy files larger than 4 GB to a USB stick. Here's how it works:
- Format the USB stick from FAT32 to NTFS. To do this, right-click the stick in the workstation, select "Format ..." and then "NTFS" as the file system. Now you can also copy larger files to your USB stick without any problems. Please note that ALL data on the stick will be deleted when formatting.
- Formatting also helps if hidden files or unpartitioned parts take up the storage capacity.
Less memory than originally on the USB stick
If formatting via Windows does not help, you can use a free program so that your USB stick shows the correct memory again:
- Download and install the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool".
- Start the program and select your USB stick under "Device". Set "NTFS" as "File System" and click on "Start". Confirm the popup with "Yes".
- After formatting, your USB stick should show the original memory size again.
