USB Type C is in the starting blocks and is already being used in some cases - for example with the new MacBook. Here you will find the most important advantages of the new connector.
USB Type C - speed advantages
Compared to USB 3.0, the Type C connector with USB 3.1 is known for its enormous bandwidth and higher current.
- Theoretically, the maximum speed is 10 Gbit / s, which is significantly faster than USB 3.0.
- The speed is sufficient to stream 4K videos at 60 FPS via USB.
- At five volts, a smartphone can be charged with a full three amperes.
- A current smartphone could potentially be fully charged in about an hour.
- Up to 20 volts are supported. So there is a charging current of 100 watts. It can also be used to charge laptops via USB. This technology is already used in the new MacBook.
Other advantages of the USB Type C
In addition to the stronger current and the increased bandwidth, the Type-C connector convinces with other features.
- Like Apple's Lightning connector, the USB Type-C fits into the port on both sides. The annoying attempts to get the right side are now a thing of the past.
- The connector is specified for 10, 000 mating processes. If you charge your smartphone once a day, this corresponds to a service life of a good 27 years.
- In the long term, USB Type C should replace all other plugs. Chargers, monitor cables and other plugs would be a thing of the past. The new MacBook shows this and only has a USB Type-C port. All other ports are omitted here.
- Attention: The USB Type C also has a disadvantage - unlike USB 3.0, this connection is not backwards compatible.
