LTE availability at Telekom, Vodafone and O2
The latest LTE mobile radio standard has also been available in Germany since early 2011. Vodafone, O2 and Telekom offer the 4G standard for smartphones. You can find out about the local availability at the providers here.
Telekom LTE network coverage
Telekom has been offering the 4G connection to its customers since mid-2011. In our CHIP network test in 2014, Telekom showed the fastest LTE network.
- Since the beginning of 2012, LTE has not only been available as a DSL replacement for rural regions, but also for mobile use. LTE is now also available for T-Mobile customers.
- The expansion has been pushed forward massively in recent years. LTE is largely available, especially in northwest Germany. There are currently somewhat larger gaps in Baden-Württemberg and Brandenburg.
- Telekom uses several LTE standards. Most of these allow a maximum surfing speed of 50 to 100 Mbit / s. Surfing at 300 Mbit / s has already been introduced, but so far it is only available in isolated cases. You can find out whether LTE is also available in your area on this Telekom website.
Check LTE availability at Vodafone
In early 2011, Vodafone was the first mobile operator to launch the LTE standard in Germany. Vodafone currently has the fastest LTE network.
- Since the end of 2011, Vodafone has not only focused on rural LTE coverage, but also on urban coverage for smartphone users.
- In the last network test in 2014, availability was around 75 percent. However, the speed and availability left something to be desired in northern German cities.
- You can find out on this website from Vodafone whether you can also use an LTE contract from Vodafone in your area.
LTE availability with O2 and E-Plus: good thanks to Fusion
O2 has also been offering mobile LTE since July 2011. In 2013, E-Plus also entered the LTE business. The network coverage can also be seen here through the merger of the two mobile operators.
- The networks of O2 and E-Plus showed an availability of around 50 and 30 percent in the 2014 CHIP network test. The common coverage is now correspondingly better.
- Unfortunately, the two providers only use the lowest LTE standard with which a maximum speed of 50 Mbit / s is possible. In the test, the connection was even faster in the countryside than in the city.
If you are still looking for a suitable LTE cell phone, you will find five smartphones with the associated tests here. With the help of the Android app "LTE Map", users can inform each other about the actual area coverage of the 4G standard - broken down by mobile operator.
