For example, if you have limited space on a removable disk, it is useful to make videos smaller. There are two ways to do this.
- For "older" formats like .mpg or .avi, shrinking the video works very well with VirtualDub. To do this, load the video and export it again in a lower resolution (see screenshot).
- The video converter SUPER is well suited for almost all video formats. You can see how this tool works in the image gallery below.
- You can convert videos to other formats with freeware tools such as SUPER or the Freemake Video Converter. Most of the time you will be shown how much space the target file will occupy.

To shrink a video with the freeware SUPER, click somewhere in the program on the right and select "Add Multimedia Files ..."
Choose the original video you want to reduce.
After you have optionally changed the video output format at the top, click on "More" in the "Video" tab to display other video sizes. Select the video size to which you want to convert the video here. If you click "More" again, you can adjust the size manually.
If you choose a bit rate that is smaller than the old one, the quality of the file will be reduced in addition to the file size.
Click "Encode" to create the video.
In the "Output" tab you can watch how your video is created. At the bottom right you can see the current file size. In our example, the video was 42 MB at the end instead of 87 MB.
