This is how much you should drink a day: you should know that
Liquid is essential for our body, but there are many myths on the Internet about how much water to drink a day. We clarify.
Water please: this is how much you should drink
Especially on the so-called dog days, there is always a lot of discussion about how much we should drink a day.
- The fact is that the body urgently needs adequate hydration. However, there is no general answer to the question of how much water you should drink every day.
- The daily fluid requirement depends on many individual factors. A very good indicator of whether your body needs fluid is your feeling of thirst. As soon as you notice that you are thirsty, you should drink something immediately.
- A flat rate of two liters of fluid per day is often recommended. The German Nutrition Society gives around 1.5 liters of water per day as a guideline.
Daily fluid requirements - that much is good for your health
You should mainly cover your daily fluid needs with water or unsweetened fruit and herbal teas. How much you drink depends on the following factors, among others:
- An important factor in calculating your daily fluid needs is your diet. If you eat a lot of foods that are characterized by a particularly high liquid content, you are already supplying your body with liquid in this way.
- Foods that contain a lot of liquid include vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes. Cucumbers consist of over 90 percent water and lots of healthy nutrients. We have put together what makes cucumbers so healthy in a separate article.
- If it is particularly warm, your body has to make up for the loss of fluid due to sweating, which means that your water requirements can easily double. Three liters of water are therefore nothing unusual on particularly hot days.
- If you do sweaty sports or work, you also need significantly more fluid than if you were dreaming in the shade.
- By the way, not only too little liquid is dangerous, too much water can also damage the organism and in extreme cases even lead to death. Especially with athletes, deaths have already resulted from drinking too much.
