Virus protection for Mac: You should be aware of this

MacOS is considered relatively safe even without virus protection, since the operating system already has its own strong security functions. However, you can make additional security settings in the system and, if necessary, protect your data with additional virus software.
Enable firewall for better virus protection
Without manual activation, the firewall is deactivated in MacOS. Therefore, you must first activate it in the settings of the Mac operating system.
- Select the system settings from the dock.
- Now select the "Security" item under the "Personal" heading.
- Next, you will need to enter your administrator password after clicking the lock icon in the lower left to be authorized to activate.
- Then click on the "Activate firewall" button and your Mac is better protected.
Activation of the gatekeeper function
You can use the gatekeeper to determine whether only programs from the Mac app store or third-party software can be installed from the Internet. A restriction to programs from the app store and from verified developers has the advantage that Apple first checks these programs and then releases them for download.
- Restart the system settings from the dock.
- Navigate to the "Security" menu item under the "Personal" topic.
- Now select the "General" tab from the top bar and activate the lock at the bottom left with your administrator password.
- Below is the description of "Allow programs from the following sources". Here you select the item "Mac App Store and verified developers". Now you can only install programs that have been checked by Apple for your security.
Better safe than sorry - Avira virus protection for your Mac
If you still want to use tried-and-tested tools such as an antivirus program, you can of course also do this on the Mac. Virus protection from "Avira" is a good alternative here.
- First download the "Avira" program for your Mac from our download portal.
- After the installation, the program carries out some virus updates, which you can confirm with "Ok".
- Avira virus protection is now activated on your Mac. You should check your system with the program at regular intervals.
