Virtualbox: Change the resolution of the guest system
In this article we will show you how you can change the resolution of the guest system in Virtualbox. You can do this in two ways. You can change the resolution or adjust the window size. First of all you have to install the guest extensions. Simply follow our instructions.
Virtualbox: Change the resolution of the guest system - install guest extensions
To change the resolution without errors, you need the guest extensions for Virtualbox. The size of the window can only be changed properly with the guest extensions. Follow these steps.
- Start your desired operating system in the virtual machine.
- Now go to "Devices" in the virtual machine menu and then to "Install guest extensions". Now Virtualbox mounts a CD on which the installation files for the guest extensions are available. Run the auto installer and restart your virtual machine.
- The guest extensions are now installed.
Virtualbox: Change the resolution of the guest system - adjust the window size and resolution
There are two methods to change the resolution of the guest system. With one you effectively change the resolution, with the other you change the window size and thus automatically the resolution. It is best to try out which method you like best.
- Start your virtual machine and go to the menu.
- Under "View", select "Customize guest display automatically" first.
- Now you have two options to adjust the resolution.
- For the first method, select "View" at the bottom of the "Display-1" menu. Here you can set the desired resolution from the dropdown menu.
- The other method is a little easier. You only have to change the window size of your guest system. You do this as with any other window. Hold one of the corners (easiest with the corner right or bottom left) with your mouse and change the size of the window. The resolution now automatically adjusts to the window size.
