Virtualbox: Install Ubuntu - how it works
With Virtualbox you can easily test a second operating system on your PC. This practical tip shows you how to install Ubuntu in Virtualbox.
Install Virtualbox on your computer
To use Ubuntu in your Virtualbox, you must first download and install the Virtualbox program:
- Download the latest version of Virtualbox in our download area.
- Run the setup to install Virtualbox.
Prepare Virtual Box for Ubuntu
The next step is to set up a new virtual machine with Virtualbox and install it in Ubuntu. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Open Virtualbox and click "New". In the window that now opens, select "Expert mode".
- Enter a name for your virtual machine. Select "Linux" under "Type" and "Ubuntu" under "Version". Here you can specify whether you want to install the 32bit or 64bit version of Ubuntu.
- Then you determine the size of the working memory. For smooth work, this should be at least 2GB.
- Under "Disk" you have to select "Create hard disk".
- Clicking on "Create" opens a pop-up for creating the hard disk. Select a file path and the size of the hard drive. You can leave the rest of the settings as is. Click "Create" again.
Install Ubuntu in Virtualbox
Finally, all you have to do is download Ubuntu and install it in the Virtualbox:
- Download Ubuntu in either 32bit or 64bit version.
- After you have downloaded the ISO file, you can select your virtual machine under Virtualbox and start it with a click on the green arrow.
- You will now be asked to select an installation medium. Select the downloaded ISO file here.
- Follow the setup to finish installing Ubuntu.
