Start up Vista and Windows 7 faster
Starting up the computer faster - practically every user wants that. Good news: If you have a PC with Windows 7 or Vista and are using a current dual-core or quad-core processor, there is a simple solution to check off the long boot time once and for all.
So you can start up Windows 7 and Vista faster
Although Windows is basically able to address a multi-core processor, this does not always work smoothly during the boot process. Therefore, Microsoft has built a switch into the operating system, although it is quite hidden, which you can use to switch on multi-core support even during the boot process:
- To do this, go to the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the desktop and enter the command "msconfig" in "Start search".
- Select the "Start" tab and click the "Advanced Options ..." button.
- There, check the "Number of processors" option. Now you can choose how many cores Windows should use when booting. Choose the maximum number possible, since this setting also applies to all programs.
- Tests have shown that, depending on the configuration of the hardware and software, up to 20 percent shorter boot times are possible. As a rule, the acceleration will level off at around ten percent.
- With the freeware program "Windows Boottimer" you can easily measure the boot times of your computer yourself and check how much faster your Windows computer now starts up.
- Additional tip: Windows start times are not always constant. For a reliable result, you should record multiple boot processes - both before and after changing the option - and determine an average boot time.
