If you want to stream your own videos or music on the Internet, you can do so with the VLC Media Player. We'll show you how it's done.
Send videos and music streams with the VideoLAN player
- Open the VLC media player and click on "Media" in the menu bar on the top right and select the item "Open media".
- In the next window you have to open the desired media file. This can be either a file on your computer, a USB stick or CD, another stream or a recording device for a live stream.
- Once you have selected the source, click on the small arrow at the bottom left next to the "Play" button and select "Stream" (see picture).
- Another window opens in which you click on "Set target" below. Select "HTTP" as the target and click on "Add". Use the default port 8080 as the port. This may still have to be released via your router.
- Under "Profile" use "Video - H.264 + AAC (MP4)" for a video, "Audio - MP3" for an audio file.
- Then click on the tool icon and select the "MPEG-TS" item under the "Encapsulation" tab.
- Then click on the "Stream" button and it will start and can be reached via your IP address.
This practical tip explains how you can then receive the stream on another computer and optionally set a buffer.
