With these instructions and the "VMWare Fusion 7" software, you can install Windows on your Mac so that you can use both systems in parallel.
VMware Fusion 7: Use Windows on Mac
First you need the "VMWare Fusion 7" program, which later establishes the interface between Mac OS and Windows. You can download a 30-day trial version from CHIP under this link.
- Install the program. Either activate it directly with a product code or continue with the trial version.
- You now have several options. Either you download and install a Windows ISO or you connect a Windows PC and your Mac in the same network and migrate it completely to your current computer. In this guide, we integrate the ISO file of a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit variant.
- Define the user name and possibly a password. Now you can also enter the product key. You should also choose the appropriate version of Windows whose ISO you added.
- You can also choose between seamless and isolated integration. If you choose the former, you do not have to copy files between the systems, as they are always available in parallel.
- Finally, you can see the default settings of the hardware. You can also change these at a later time. Click "Next" to get Windows ready to go.
Install Windows on Mac
After you have set up "VMWare Fusion 7" and the associated Windows OS, a window appears with black content and a play button. Press this to load Windows.
- The usual setup for the Windows installation is started. This may take some time. You do not have to set anything. At the end, it restarts and greets you with the Windows desktop.
- Now everything should work. Try moving files from Windows to Mac and vice versa and loading a website.
- To switch to full-screen mode, click on "View" and "Full screen" in the menu bar. You can also integrate Windows directly into Mac OS with "Unity".
- There are also symbols in the VMWare window that represent pause, stop and start characters. With these, you either pause or start Windows or shut it down.
- Drag and drop files from Mac to the Windows window to copy them.
Adapt hardware settings to Windows
When "VMWare Fusion" is started, a settings window also opens. We explain the most important settings below. It should be noted that all hardware settings can only be made when Windows is shut down.
- Shared use: No matter whether you have selected the isolated or the integrated variant - set here whether and which folders of the Mac should be made available to Windows.
- Processors and hardware: If you plan to run performance-hungry software under Windows, you should adjust a few values at this point. For example, select more memory and more CPU cores that VMWare Windows can allocate. Under "Graphics" you can release a larger part of the graphics memory of the graphics card.
- To use the Internet in the Windows operating system, open the menu item "Network card" and activate "Share with my Mac". Alternatively, you can also choose another point, but then the dial-in to the network changes.
