VoIP and security - how secure is it?
If you use a VoIP phone or an app for VoIP telephony, you should always pay attention to security. We show you how secure VoIP really is.
VoIP: How Secure Is Internet Telephony?
VoIP (Voice over IP) is not really more secure or insecure than normal telephony. However, since VoIP devices act similarly to computers in a network, they can also be attacked.
- A call via VoIP is generally protected, but not bug-proof. The technology behind VoIP is not insecure, but there are also exploitable gaps here.
- You should be particularly careful with open WLANs or networks with many other users. It is also possible for inexperienced hackers to listen to your phone calls with the right software.
- With VoIP, always make sure that the software used or the router encrypts the call sufficiently. See the next paragraph for more information.
VoIP: How to protect yourself from hackers
- If you use VoIP with your house phone, your router needs a password that is as secure as possible. You should also protect your WiFi network with a secure password.
- If you use VoIP calls via software on the PC or with smartphone apps, there are also "good" and "bad" services. Few providers take the trouble to provide the calls with an end-to-end encryption.
