Volleyball: rules explained clearly
Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world. In the following we explain the most important rules.
Volleyball rules - the most important points
The aim of volleyball is to have the ball land on the ground of the opposing field and to prevent it from landing on your own field.
- In volleyball, two teams, each with six players, face each other. The position of these players is fixed and after a change of service the players of the respective team change their positions in a fixed order.
- There are no time limits for volleyball. To win the game, a team must win three sets. A total of five sets are played. A set is won when a team reaches 25 points and has a lead of at least two points.
- If the ball lands on the opposing field, you get a point. The team that won the last turn serves.
- The leading team can request a one-minute break after each 8 or 16 points. Both teams can request a timeout of 30 minutes each, regardless of the score.
- It is allowed to pass the ball three times in one turn. In volleyball, it is prohibited that a player accepts the ball twice in a row.
- Six 6 substitutions are allowed per set. Substituted players can only be replaced if the previously substituted player replaces this player.
This is how you win a move in volleyball
According to the rules, there are various ways in volleyball to decide a move for yourself.
- You win a move when the ball hits the opposing floor, the opponent makes a mistake, or hits the ball outside the field.
- A mistake is made, for example, if a team passes the ball too often, holds the ball tight, touches the net or hits the ball against or under the net.
Playing positions in volleyball
There are a total of six game positions in volleyball, which must always be occupied by one player.
- Two of the game positions are in the back field of the field (positions 1 & 5). Position 1 is always serving.
- Positions 2, 3 & 4 are in the front of the field. Your task is to block incoming balls and play them back. Due to the principle of "standing", the outer two players (2 & 4) pass the balls to the middle player by passing, so that the latter can throw the ball onto the opposing field.
- Position 6 is in the middle of the field. The player who occupies this position is responsible as a so-called "switcher" for playing long and short balls at the same time. This player often accepts the opposing serves.
