Nintendo is celebrating success after success with the Switch. The company was already experimenting with VR glasses in the nineties: You can find out what VR fans can expect for the Switch here.
VR glasses for the Nintendo Switch - this headset already exists
Rumors have been circulating for some time that Nintendo is working on VR glasses for the Switch itself. However, since there is no official announcement regarding such a headset, another company is now trying its luck and is releasing a virtual reality device for the console. You can find out how the product works and what it is all about below:
- The VR glasses from NS Glasses were specially designed for the Nintendo Switch and funded by a crowdfunding campaign.
- In contrast to VR glasses like the HTC Vive or the Occulus Rift, the device is not a fully functional VR headset.
- The glasses work in a similar way to the offsets for smartphones: the switch is clamped into a device at the outer end of the gadget and you then view the game through a lens inside the glasses.
- This structure is intended to create a 3D effect even though the game appears in 2D on the console screen.
- However, since the Switch games were not developed for VR, head movements have no influence on the gameplay. Unfortunately, the virtual reality effect is missing.
VR glasses for the Nintendo Switch - these reasons speak against it
Although many fans are longing for VR glasses for the Nintendo Switch, there are unfortunately also reasons that speak against a headset for the console. Resourceful hackers have discovered that Nintendo has definitely experimented with virtual reality, but we will explain why it could still be just a dream for now:
- The console hardware is not strong enough to use virtual reality: Due to the hybrid nature of the switch, some savings in hardware power had to be accepted. Glasses like the Occulus Rift and HTC Vive need powerful PCs to work smoothly. VR cannot be easily upgraded without an upgrade of the console.
- A headset is much more likely, similar to that of NS Glasses, into which the switch is placed. This theory is supported by patents pending from Nintendo. For example, a Nintendo Labo set would be conceivable. However, this also means that there is no real VR experience.
- In an official statement by Reggie Fils-Aimé, former CEO of Nintendo of America, the company explains that the technology surrounding virtual reality has not yet reached the mainstream and is therefore of no interest to the console manufacturer.
Before you get used to the idea of VR glasses, you should find out about the subject of motion sickness at VR. Because this disease can quickly spoil the joy of the new gadget.
