It's not that easy to become a successful tank driver in War Thunder. We have put together the best tips for the game.
War Thunder: tank types
Every good tank driver should know the basic differences between the tanks in War Thunder. You can roughly compare it like this:
- Tanks are divided into three categories: light, medium and heavy tanks. These have different strengths and weaknesses and shine especially in well-mixed teams.
- Light tanks are mobile and can be used for scouting due to their high speed. It also lets you slower vehicles in the back to hit their weak points. But their weapons and armor are generally worse and direct duels should be avoided.
- Medium tanks are reliable all-rounders that combine mobility with acceptable weapons and armor. But they don't stand out from the crowd. They can be used for almost any task and usually make up the bulk of an army.
- Heavy tanks sacrifice mobility, but they can withstand a lot and are equipped with very large guns that can quickly kill the enemy. Your biggest problem is tanks that maneuver them out and then stab you in the back. These tanks therefore need escort protection.
Tips on the tanks in War Thunder
Once you have the basic knowledge, you can make battles much easier with a few tricks:
- In any case, cover is the be-all and end-all. Then you don't have to use your armor - no matter how thick - at all. Numerous objects are hidden on the maps, which at least partially protect against shelling or at least sight.
- It is also a popular trick to climb slopes so that only the turret is visible. So you fire unhindered, but offer little attack surface itself.
- Good positioning can also provide more armor. Position your tank so that a corner is facing your opponent. This means that a direct hit must penetrate more armor and there is a good chance that the projectile will bounce off one of the two edges.
- Also familiarize yourself with all vehicles and learn more about their strengths, weaknesses and, above all, good and badly armored positions.
- The same applies to ammunition: In general, a distinction is made between armor-piercing AP and highly explosive HE ammunition, although there are various subdivisions with varying properties.
- AP bullets are good for direct hits. However, they easily bounce off oblique armor. Variations range from better rebound properties to explosive cores and hardened core.
- HE bullets explode directly on impact. In general, this causes a lot of damage, which, however, mostly disappears on thick armor. Therefore, these projectiles are particularly good against light, unarmored targets or also to destroy chains. Variations of HE ammunition make them even more effective against light targets, give a bonus against heavy ones or create anti-bunker projectiles.
- Direct attacks from the front are relatively difficult, but from behind you often have a good chance of shooting directly at the engine. If medium tanks are currently too mobile, you can first destroy their chains and then maneuver them out.
- All of this leads to the essence of tank driving: Don't drive off blindly, but feel your way slowly and carefully through the battlefield. Stay in cover and try to surprise your opponents. Hills and other openly visible terrain make you the target. Avoid them whenever possible.
