What did social media buttons do on porn sites? Why would a user publicly announce which porn they are watching? We got to the bottom of the question of why sites like PornHub or RedTube offer share functions. There are several backgrounds that could be responsible for the buttons.
Porn sites and social media buttons - how do they go together?
- Porn sites are usually CMS sites. Most content management systems integrate social media buttons as standard. The site operators have probably simply not deactivated the share buttons.
- Porn site providers also usually have sites on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Co. There are "soft" pictures shown. Even if it rarely happens - you first have to confirm the sharing in a popup - the providers hope for one or the other user who accidentally shares: Each share is advertising.
- Another reason for the buttons that are actually unnecessary are the search engines. As is well known, Google lists pages with social media buttons above.
- At least the operators of the porn site PornHub know about the redundancy of the function. On April 1st of this year they allowed themselves a rather strange April Fool's joke: Whoever called up the page was informed that all viewed porn is now automatically shared on Facebook. Of course, that was just a fake message - but the users didn't find the joke really funny.
