Why do you always buy more than planned from Ikea? Easily explained
Why only - this question goes around in the mind of many when they have bought much more from Ikea than was originally planned. Buying from Ikea is just fun and somehow we just can't resist taking one or two little things with us.
Buy more than planned: Ikea - the uncanny seduction
Basically, many of our purchases are made spontaneously and are not really rational. Even if we ourselves are firmly convinced of the opposite - the reality is different. A particularly good example of more or less senseless spontaneous shopping is the shopping stroll through Ikea.
- Admittedly, the Swedish furniture store is really good at seducing us. On the other hand, of course, it's not just Ikea's fault if, after the supposedly rationally thought out shopping, we can hardly get the trunk of our car. The magic word is neuromarketing.
- With the help of magnetic resonance imaging, the brain regions of the test subjects are closely observed and analyzed. Resourceful marketing experts have long discovered neurology and of course work tirelessly to refine their carefully planned marketing strategies.
- But that doesn't just happen under clinical trial conditions. While we are being guided through the Ikea corridors, our behavior is also observed very closely. And it is not just watching. The responsible persons act immediately as soon as they register that something is not really well received by us.
- Our emotions are a major factor in our purchases. Who does not know: If we are sad, we feel the urgent urge to comfort ourselves with something. The same applies to particularly good performances, for which we like to reward ourselves.
- Irrespective of our own emotions, Ikea also manages to create a homely atmosphere. We just feel comfortable in the shopping hall, almost like at home. And if you feel good, you like to stay longer and, of course, are even more willing to buy.
- Added to this are the oversized shopping trolleys or bags, which of course have to be filled. Especially when everyone else is already passing us with well-filled cars and a happy grin on their faces.
- Ikea is also very skillful in presenting even the tiniest little things in a very appealing context. So we can immediately imagine where the candlestick has to go. And once we have the thought in our head, the feeling of not being able to live without it becomes bigger and bigger, and before we know it, our shopping cart is getting fuller.
- Of course, it is also clever that we only load the large parts below, shortly before the checkout. So we are not hindered when shopping and there is enough space in the car for all sorts of more or less useful little things.
- If you want to prevent this manipulation in the future, make an exact shopping list beforehand. Work through the list and hit your fingers if you reach for something that isn't on the list. It is also helpful to have as much money as possible with you and nothing else.
- Try it and you will find that it works. But honestly, shopping at Ikea is no longer really fun and we want to have fun, right?
