What does iOS actually mean? Easily explained
Whether iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, you will be confronted with iOS on all of these Apple devices.
- iOS is short for Internetwork Operating System. This in turn means that the iOS is an operating system like Windows or Linux.
- Apple's iOS originated from the Macintosh operating system, the Mac OSX.
- The Apple software for the iPhone was first presented in January 2007. At that time, Steve Jobs presented the new operating system as "Mac OS that runs on the iPhone".
- Apple did not adopt this funny, but perhaps somewhat lengthy term. The mobile operating system for the iPhone was simply dubbed "iPhone OS".
- The name "iPhone OS" lasted until mid-2012, when Apple slightly changed the name of the software again.
- The change was necessary because the operating system is not only installed on the iPhone, but also on all other Apple mobile devices such as the iPad and iPod Touch.
- Since June 2012, you have therefore come across the term iOS on Apple mobile devices.
