What is 2D? Easily explained
Video games come in all kinds of colors and shapes. In this practical tip, we explain what a 2D game is and how it differs from other games.
Layers in space: what is 2D?
- 2D is the short form for two-dimensionality. A 2D plane therefore has only two characteristics: the length and the width.
- Mathematically speaking, this means that a point can be represented using these labels (longitude and latitude or x and y).
- Based on the picture of the classic "Super Mario Bros." you can understand that. The position of Mario can be represented using two items (length = 1 and width = 3).
2D computer games: between retro look and 3D
- Older games in particular used the 2D look. However, not for aesthetic reasons, but because a few years ago there was no technology to represent 3-dimensional objects.
- 3D, on the other hand, has three labels: length, width and depth. Most of the games you encounter these days are shown in 3D. Famous representatives include GTA and Super Mario Galaxy.
- However, many games are based on the retro look and are displayed pixel-like in 2D.
In the next practical tip, we will explain how you can play Super Mario online.
