- In 2014, Android expanded its market share to around 85 percent. The Android operating system was thus installed on around 85 percent of all smartphones used worldwide.

- Android is continuously developed by the "Open Handset Alliance". The company was founded by Google and currently represents a network of 87 companies. The aim is to create a system that is as uniform as possible for all smartphones.
- In addition to Google, members of the "Open Handset Alliance" also include other smartphone manufacturers such as HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung. These use the Android operating system on their smartphones and tablets. Depending on the manufacturer, special apps are preinstalled or the system adapted.
- Even though Android belongs to the largest part of the market, there is still active competition. The Apple company has developed its own operating system. IOS instead of Android runs on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The operating system "Windows Phone" runs on smartphones from Nokia and Microsoft.
