What is DECT? Explained in a simple and understandable way

If you have a cellular phone at home, you are probably also dealing with DECT. We explain what this is in this practical tip.
Simply explained: That means DECT
DECT stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications - and is a standard for signal transmission from mobile landline stations to their base stations.
- The DECT standard describes how a cordless telephone communicates with its network and thus secures, among other things, the radio wave frequency used for this.
- Wireless telephones communicate on a frequency band below that of WLAN and other radio communication, thus avoiding interference.
- The range of the waves is generally very short, but still supplies closed rooms well. In the open field, you could even move several hundred meters from the base.
- However, these waves are not enough to access the actual telephone network. This requires a connection via a base station specially connected to the external network.
- However, DECT is also used by devices that only communicate in a closed network, for example some baby monitors.
- These use one of the useful properties of DECT: The possibility of supplying several telephones with just one base and allowing them to communicate with each other.
- Contrary to the fear of some users, no damage to the health due to the electromagnetic fields of wireless telephones has been proven. The maximum permissible transmission power of 250 mW is harmless.
- However, the devices heat their surroundings slightly due to the radio waves. This can be perceived as unpleasant - for example, during long phone calls.
Some routers can also work with the communication standard. We will explain how to set up DECT on your Fritzbox.
