What is a dedicated server? Easily explained
If you search for your own server on the Internet, you will quickly come across the "Dedicated Server". We'll tell you exactly what that is and how a dedicated server works.
Dedicated server - what is it?
- A dedicated server is a server that is only intended for a specific purpose. This means that the full performance of the server can be used for the desired task.
- A server is usually rented from a provider, such as 1 & 1 or Strato. This server can then be used as a proxy or web server, among other things. The CHIP.de website also runs on a rented web server.
- If it is a dedicated server, this server and all of its hardware is only used by one customer. Renting a server for a few euros per month is usually only possible because it is not a dedicated server. Such servers are often used by up to 50 customers, who therefore have to share the performance of one server.
Virtual Dedicated Server - what is it?
If you don't want to share a slow but cheap server with several customers, but don't want to spend a lot of money on a dedicated server, the Virtual Dedicated Server could be the solution for you.
- Several small servers are emulated on a single server. Similar to how, for example, you can use a second Windows system in parallel with software using VirtualBox, a dedicated server can also divide its resources over several simulated systems.
- This means that every customer receives assurable hardware performance and their own IP address. Otherwise you only get these advantages with dedicated servers. If you want solid performance for not too much money, a virtual dedicated server is a good solution.
