What is a gimbal? Easily explained
In this article we explain what a gimbal is and what you can do with it.
That is what the term gimbal means
Gimbal is the English term for a gimbal. This refers to a structure that is a kind of external image stabilization for your camera. Many cameras, especially action cams, have no image stabilization due to their area of application. In this case, you can attach a gimbal to the camera to stabilize it.
- In addition to being used as a support for action cams, a gimbal can also be used to stabilize a digital SLR camera, for example. So-called tripods are very popular, but they work in principle just like a gimbal.
- The physical explanation is that a gimbal is a structure in which a body can turn in all directions without falling out of the frame or the overall system.
Areas of application of a gimbal
- Many trade fair visitors in particular want to take professional photographs of a trade fair. Therefore, there are some sets in which a gimbal is sold together with a vest. This vest is equipped with a kind of tripod, at the end of which there is usually a small arm, on the tip of which you can place and pivot the camera. The cardanic suspension on the vest itself reduces vibrations when walking and creates a stable video.
- On bike tours or in general during sporting activities, it is becoming increasingly popular to make a video for relatives and friends. However, since many action cams do not have an image stabilizer, a gimbal to stabilize the video is also recommended. Of course, the attachment is a bit larger, but so you get a reasonably smooth picture when downhill by bike.
- Many gimbals are specially built with an attachment for attachment to drones. Some drones have a camera, but most of the time it's not really good. Therefore, many people go a different way and buy an action cam with a corresponding tripod. Since a drone does not always fly straight and can always jerk something, a gimbal is very useful here, as it counteracts the jerking with your own movements.
