What is a mod? Easily explained
The term "mod" is an abbreviation for "modification", which is why one can also say "a mod". What is hidden behind it can be guessed from the word origin: The Latin "modificare" means something like "moderate". In relation to computer programs and games, this also applies to a certain extent: something is shortened with a "mod", but sometimes also expanded. In this article we explain exactly what is behind it.
This is a mod and it does
- A mod changes something. Above all, the term is used in relation to computer software, especially games. A mod changes this software.
- The mods are usually not created by the official development team, but by private hobby developers. These are mostly themselves players of the modified (or "modded") game.
- A mod can be used to change very different things in a computer game: from the graphics - such as objects or textures - to new functions and bug fixes.
- A mod is similar, but not the same as a so-called plug-in or add-on: these also expand and improve games and programs, but are usually published by the official development team.
