The term nerd has been popular ever since The Big Bang Theory. What exactly that means and where is the difference to the geek is not clear to everyone. We'll explain it to you very simply.
Classic stereotypes: what distinguishes the nerd from the geek?
Nerd is a term for people who are often highly intelligent or at least act that way and who focus passionately to excessively on intellectual activities.
- Like geeks, nerds are often also interested in niches that most people view or have been skeptical about, such as comics, role-playing games or technology topics.
- However, the focus is a little more on science and nerds don't tend to exuberantly share their interests with strangers.
- They are absorbed in their intellectual pursuit, so they often appear introverted and use a lot of technical jargon when they do talk about their area of interest - even with laypersons.
- At the same time, the nerd cliché also includes a lack of social skills, not least because nerds care little or nothing about the opinion of others.
- In American films and series in particular, nerds are therefore portrayed as people who are fundamentally less attractive and who do not bother about their appearance. The "nerd glasses" is a very hip example.
- It should not be forgotten that these are, of course, clichés and that hardly anyone has an excessive interest.
- That is why it is hard to draw a clear line between nerd and geek. The two mix very quickly.
- Although nerd was originally used in a derogatory way, the term is now being adopted by many who understand it as an award and a sign of their group membership.
