What is a netlock? Easily explained
Netlock and SIM-Lock are swapped quickly or used as a synonym. We will explain what it is.
Netlock: what's the difference to SIM lock?
- With the well-known SIM lock, smartphones can only be used with the SIM card of the selected mobile service provider. For example, if Telekom sells you a smartphone with a contract, the SIM lock prevents you from using a SIM card from another mobile phone provider in your smartphone.
- The Netlock does not go quite as far as the SIM Lock: for example, if you buy a smartphone with a Netlock from Vodafone, it only accepts SIM cards that use the D2 network from Vodafone. This also includes providers such as Edeka Mobil, Fyve and Smartmobil. They offer their own tariffs, but also use the Vodafone network.
- As a rule, both SIM-Lock and Netlock expire after a few years. This is usually done automatically by the mobile operator. You also have the option to remove the SIM / Netlock manually.
