What is a PUK and where can I find it?
In addition to the PIN, each SIM card also has a PUK. But what is that exactly and what is the PUK number needed for? We have summarized all important information in this practical tip.
What is a PUK?
- "PUK" stands for "Personal Unblocking Key" - a personal unlock key for your cell phone.
- The PUK is an 8-digit number that fulfills the function of a second password. That is why it is often called "SuperPin".
- In addition to the PIN and for the first login, each SIM card also has a PUK number, which you cannot change yourself.
For this you need the PUK:
- If you enter the wrong PIN three times in a row when logging in, you will be asked to enter the PUK for security reasons.
- Please note that you have a maximum of ten attempts to enter the PUK number. Otherwise your SIM card will be blocked completely.
- After successfully entering the PUK, you must define a new PIN and confirm it by entering it again.
How to find your PUK
- You will receive the PUK in a letter together with your SIM card. You should keep this well.
- If you have lost your PUK or, for example, did not have it on hand during your vacation, you can contact the customer service of your mobile service provider. However, this is usually associated with high costs (for example Telekom: currently around 15 euros).
- Customer service needs your personal customer password to determine your PUK in addition to the mobile phone number and the SIM card number.
