Again and again there is talk of a "secure password". But what makes a password really secure? We'll show you what you need to know about passwords.
How to make your password secure
- At least eight characters: the fewer characters a password has, the faster it can be cracked. That is why particularly sensitive areas are also protected with passwords that are over 20 characters long.
- Uppercase and lowercase letters as well as special characters and numbers: This increases the number of possible combinations many times over. And the more options there are, the harder it is to crack the code. That is why special characters are very important for a good password. It is best to position these within the password and not at the beginning or end.
- No reference: Your password should not contain any personal reference - for example, no names or birthdays.
- No patterns: combinations like "12345678" or eight times the same letter should not be used as a password. Also "asdfghhjkl" - that is, keys next to each other - should be avoided.
- The best thing is passwords without any sense, like "jwO8_Ls7 * quIk". But of course they are more difficult to remember. You can therefore build donkey bridges - for example as a sentence: "Ben I will be home at 6 o'clock in the morning!" becomes the password " !"

- If possible, use each password only for one application or one account: The principle "if you crack one, you have all" must be avoided.
- Change your password regularly. You should do this especially with online banking and with your email account. We'll show you exactly how this works for GMX, for example. We have put together tips for secure banking in this tip.
- Do not write down passwords and do not pass on your codes to third parties. You should treat your passwords in a similar way to your bank PIN.
- There are various tools on the Internet that can be used to generate secure passwords. It is questionable whether they are all virus-free and harmless. You are only on the safe side if you create your own passwords.
