It is too big for a smartphone, but also not a laptop: a tablet. You can find out what this is and where it differs from other devices in this article.
What is a tablet? The difference to smartphones and laptops
A tablet is a portable and flat computer that is characterized by the fact that it is operated by a touchscreen and does without a mouse and keyboard.
- Tablets can be operated similarly to smartphones. This is because mostly smartphone operating systems are used that have been adapted for tablets. As with smartphones, the most commonly used operating systems are Android, iOS and Windows.
- Tablets are usually operated with the finger, with the exception of a pen.
- Compared to smartphones, tablets have a larger screen and are therefore easier to use, but also heavier and of course larger.
- Tablets can connect to the Internet via WLAN. In addition, many tablets are offered with an additional SIM card slot and can thus access the Internet via a mobile data network. Nevertheless, you cannot make calls on tablets.
- Other programs, so-called apps, can be installed on a tablet just like on a smartphone.
- Tablets are only suitable for use at the workplace to a limited extent, since the operating systems do not cover all the functions of a home computer and it is very cumbersome to write long texts with the on-screen keyboard. At least with the latter, a Bluetooth keyboard helps.
- Tablets are used in many other places, for example for remote control of cameras, televisions or other devices. Tablets are also increasingly used to display media content or for games.
- There are also tablet models that come with a keyboard. The keyboard is permanently connected to convertibles. However, unlike a laptop, you can flip the keyboard 360 degrees and then use the device like an ordinary tablet. With detachables, the keyboard is plugged in and can be removed if necessary. In another article, we will show you the best convertible tablets.
- Most tablets have only one interface. However, there are also models with a USB connection or display output, so that you can display the image on a monitor or television.
- If you are not sure whether you should buy a tablet or notebook, we will give you another practical tip to help you make a purchase decision.
