What is a USB hub? Clearly explained
When it comes to USB connections, the term USB hub is often used. We explain what a hub is and what you need it for.
USB hub = USB distributor
A USB hub can be compared to a multiple socket, i.e. a device with several USB connections:
- The hub is connected to the computer via a USB cable. Now you can connect all USB devices such as external hard drives, USB sticks or printers to the hub.
- The USB connection is then forwarded from the hub to the computer. This has the advantage that only one USB slot remains occupied on your computer, but you still use several devices.
- Depending on the hub, you can usually use between 2 and 10 USB ports.
- But be careful: Devices that require a lot of electricity, such as printers or webcams, usually do not run through a hub. Since all USB devices share the same power source, the voltage is usually not sufficient for all devices. Some USB sticks can also be affected.
