In addition to apps, there are also so-called widgets (gadgets) on smartphones and tablets. In the following article, we explain what exactly a widget is and in which surfaces you can find it.
What is a widget?
A widget is an element on the screen of a tablet or computer that you can use interactively.
- You control the application either by mouse or finger input of the individual widget elements. Common operating systems like Mac OS X, Windows, Android and Linux support the controls.
- In contrast to a program, a widget does not run independently in the operating system. It therefore requires its own engine that serves as an interface between the widget and the operating system.
- Another name for a widget is "Gadget".
- Popular widgets are, for example, weather displays, clocks or lock screens. Some apps also offer their own widgets, for example a calendar overview from Google.
