There are numerous DLL files on your computer, some of which report incomprehensible errors from time to time. This article explains what a DLL file is, how it works, and what you can do with it.
DLL file: what is it?
- The abbreviation DLL stands for "Dynamic Link Library", so-called dynamic program libraries. These are files that can contain code, data and machine code.
- DLL files can be used by several programs at the same time. This means that changes for several programs only have to be changed in one place. In the later execution, all applications then adopt the new code.
- The content of DLL files is varied. Among other things, the drag & drop function under Windows is controlled via a DLL file.
- DLL files behave similarly to the known EXE files. The DLL files can be executed with a double click, but the action is mostly invisible in the background.
- The .dll file extension is used not only by DLL files, but also by EXE files and drivers. DLL files are therefore an important part of the Windows system.
- A disadvantage of DLL files is that programs sometimes need different versions of a DLL file. When installing graphics-intensive applications, you will be asked from time to time for a "sample.dll" file. In this case, there is only an outdated version of the file. You must then either insert the current one manually or make it available through another installation.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to install a DLL file.
