If you browse through the settings of your computer, you will quickly come across the firewall. We explain what exactly a firewall is.
What is a firewall and what do you need it for?
- A firewall is a system that is designed to protect individual computers or entire computer networks from unauthorized access. Metaphorically speaking, this "wall" stands between your computer and the Internet.
- There is a firewall on every computer. Firewalls are also built into routers and smartphones. These can be configured by the user (at least on computers).
- The firewall is located between the public network, i.e. the Internet, and the local network. In this way, incoming and outgoing connections can be checked, blocked or permitted.
- The firewall sees when a program wants to act on your network. If the firewall is not regularly updated with updates, it no longer detects current dangers.
- A firewall is essential for any system that is connected to the Internet. It prevents malicious software or hackers from accessing your PC and causing you harm.
