What is a mixed number? That is behind it
You probably heard the term mixed number in your math class. In this article we explain exactly what such a number is.
What is a mixed number?
In mathematics, the term "mixed number" has something to do with fractions.
- So-called false breaks are important in this context. This is how fractions that are greater than 1 are called. An example of a fake fraction would be 7/6, since it describes a number greater than 1.
- 5/6, on the other hand, denote a number smaller than a whole, so it is a real fraction.
- Fake fractions can be represented as a mixed number. This means that a mixed number consists of an integer and a fraction.
- Applying this to our example 7/6, this fake fraction can also be represented as 1 1/6 - and that would be the notation as a mixed number. Fake fractions can therefore be represented in different ways.
In the next practical tip, we will explain a term that is also used in mathematics, among other things. It's about what an index is.
