When it comes to television, films or streaming, the term "set-top box" is often used. We show you what a set-top box is, how the devices work and which set-top box suits your needs.
Set-top box: what is it?
- A set-top box is a device that adds some functions to your television. Set-top boxes are usually quite small and are connected directly to the TV.
- You can translate the term set-top box with "add-on device". The devices can only be used in combination with a television. A set-top box behaves similarly to a computer: you can only use the device with a screen.
- There are different types of set-top boxes. Among other things, DVD players and game consoles are referred to as set-top boxes. Are you currently talking about set-top boxes, mostly devices like Apple TV or the Amazon Fire TV are meant.
Apple TV and Fire TV: what can the set-top boxes do?
- Set-top boxes such as Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV are both connected to the TV using an HDMI cable. Then connect to the Internet via LAN or WLAN. The devices are about the size of a palm, but can do a lot:
- The set-top boxes behave similarly to smartphones. Using a small remote control, you can start various apps on the boxes and use them.
- Mainly you can use it to stream films and series and play music. Depending on the device, a wide variety of content can be transferred from your smartphone or tablet to the television via the set-top box.
- Download the ZDF app, for example, you can browse the ZDF media library on your Amazon Fire TV and play past programs on your TV. You can also play smaller games on the big screen.
