What is a smart card? Easily explained
The term smart card is used both in the area of security and in TV reception. In this article, we explain what a smart card actually is and how the devices work exactly.
Smartcard - what is it?
- A smart card is a plastic card with a computer chip. A smart card looks like an EC card and serves as a kind of digital ID.
- Smart cards are often used in large companies to confirm identities. If the smart card is inserted into a suitable reader, certain information such as name, age, department and authorization can be read out.
- This means, for example, that doors can be opened, access can be activated or processes can be authorized. Smart cards are often additionally protected with a PIN code. This makes the card doubly secure. This type of authentication could be replaced in the future by the controversial RFID chip implants.
Smarcard for the TV - what is it?
- However, smart cards are also used in another area: If you would like to receive channels via satellite in HD at home, many providers such as Kabel Deutschland will send you a smart card.
- This smart card is placed in the so-called CI + module. This is a kind of adapter for the smart card. The CI + module is then connected to the receiver or TV set. Almost all current TV sets have a CI + input.
- The smart card enables you to receive certain channels. Depending on which transmitter package you have ordered from your provider, the relevant content will be activated for your smart card. The smart card then decrypts all paid channels.
In the next practical tip we will show you how you can also receive private channels such as Sat1, Pro7 and RTL in HD.
