What is a subdomain? Easily explained
You regularly come across so-called subdomains on the Internet. This website is also a subdomain. But what is a subdomain anyway? We explain it to you in this practical tip.
What is a Subdomain - Simple Explanation
In an extensive network like the Internet, a decent system is needed to find addresses quickly and easily. The addresses on the Internet are domains that can themselves have subdomains. This means that content can be called up at one address, but addressed separately.
- Such a domain name is made up of different parts such as the top-level domain, domain and even the subdomain.
- A top-level domain is about ".de" in praxistipps.chip.de. You can think of this as a postcode or country code such as "in Germany".
- The domain would then be an address within a country. For example the CHIP office within Germany.
- A subdomain is then a further subdivision within this domain in order to make large projects directly accessible. The CHIP office therefore has different departments at the same address, which are separate from each other.
- Using the example of this website, "praxistipps" in praxistipps.chip.de is the subdomain on which you are currently located. "chip" is the domain and ".de" is the top-level domain.
- A complete domain is built from left to right from small to large: subdomain.domain.top-level-domain.
