Sport without "sport": What is eSport?
The eSports scene is growing continuously in Germany. In other countries such as Korea or Japan, computer gaming has already established itself as a sport.
- The term "eSport" stands for "electronic sport" and is therefore usually carried out on a computer or game console.
- The "athletes" play a certain game either alone or as a team against each other. The winners either receive league points or are one round further according to the tournament principle.
- Basically, every game can be played, but some games are particularly popular and suitable due to their complexity. Real-time strategy games (Starcraft, League of Legends etc.) and first person shooters (Counter Strike, Quake ...) are the most popular disciplines.
- Similar to a sporting event, the tournaments are played in front of live viewers. Either in the form of events or as a stream on the Internet.
- Prize money for the winners will also be provided and teams of sponsors will be supported.
- Although the scene in Germany is still relatively small, successful players can make a living from eSports.
