What is hardware? Easily explained
In this practical tip, we explain what the term "hardware" means. It often appears in connection with "software", but describes the counterpart to software.
In a nutshell: that's hardware
The technical components that make up your computer or smartphone are called hardware. This includes all components that are installed in the PC or laptop and react to electronic or mechanical impulses. Peripheral devices such as printers, USB sticks and keyboards are also hardware components.
- A computer usually consists of a mainboard, a graphics card, the processor, RAM and drives.
- Together with the respective operating system, the hardware forms the basis for installing and using your programs.
- The cost and size of the hardware vary depending on the device. While very small components are installed in a smartphone, a tower PC contains a mainboard of over 12 inches in size.
- In addition to the built-in elements, devices such as a mouse and keyboard are also part of the hardware. Output devices such as printers and monitors are also included.
Hardware vs. Software: that's the difference
If you cannot distinguish between the two terms "hardware" and "software", the German translation may help. "Hardware" means "hardware" in German.
- All components of your PC that you can really touch are hardware.
- Software, on the other hand, is subsequently installed on the components. This is usually done via a user interface.
- In another article we describe in detail what software is.
