What is HDMI CEC? Easily explained
The name HDMI-CEC can now be found in most menus of hi-fi devices such as AV amplifiers or Bluray players. We will explain what you can do with it.
HDMI CEC - replacement for many remote controls
- With CEC, you can control devices connected via HDMI with just one remote control. The prerequisite is of course that all devices support the standard. The abbreviation stands for "Consumer Electronics Control".
- HDMI CEC has been around since the introduction of HDMI. However, the feature has only recently been supported by so many devices that it is really worth using it.
- The CEC is often hidden behind manufacturer names such as "Anynet +" (Samsung) or "BRAVIA Sync" (Sony). But it always means the same thing.
- If you switch on the feature, your devices establish a CEC connection during the "HDMI handshake". For example, you can then use your TV remote control to control the volume of the surround system.
- Even better: the remote controls of some devices are completely eliminated. You can control your Raspberry Pi with Kodi completely via TV remote control. This saves you an additional USB port.
