The term LAN often appears on the Internet or under Windows. But with many users it remains unclear what it is all about. We clarify it.
What does LAN mean?
- The abbreviation LAN stands for Local Area Network, i.e. a local network that is spatially limited.
- Usually a LAN network means the complete network of a building or house. In large companies, however, LAN networks can also take on gigantic dimensions.
- For example, if you have connected your computer to your router using a LAN cable (see picture), you can use it to access the Internet. If another computer or a printer is connected to the router, it is in the same network. Data can now be exchanged or printed via the LAN connection.
- If you connect several devices such as computers or printers using a LAN cable via a distribution station such as a router, a LAN network is established. In this, data can now be exchanged like a USB cable.
If several computers are connected via a local network to play PC games, this is also called a LAN party.
