More and more devices advertise with Miracast compatibility. In this practical tip, we explain what exactly Mircast is.
What is Miracast?
More and more Miracast devices have been on the market since 2012. Behind this is the following:
- Miracast is a certificate of the Wi-Fi Alliance.
- Mircast is - similar to screen mirroring from Samsung or Apple's AirPlay - a screen sharing process in which the image of a device can be displayed on the screen of another device without a cable or router.
- For example, you can watch a mobile phone video on your flat screen TV without any wiring. Videos with up to 1080p and sound with up to 5.1 channels can be transmitted.
- For this purpose, Mircast uses a special, standardized peer-to-peer WLAN connection. This means that both selected devices must have a WLAN module.
- For wireless data transmission, the transmitter and receiver device must be coupled to one another at the push of a button and by exchanging an identification number.
- Already 8, 000 devices, such as smartphones, tablets, BluRay players and laptops with Android and Windows operating systems, are already capable of mircast.
- Various brands, such as NVidia, Samsung, LG, Google Nexus / Android, and Motorola have released the Mircast certificate for numerous devices.
- You can find out whether your device is compatible with Miracast using the Advanced Search. Just tick the box next to "Miracast® - All Products", "Miracast® - Source", or "Miracast® - Display".
- While the transmitter must be Miracast-capable under all circumstances, you can plug a special Miracast receiver into the HDMI port on the receiver.
The Mircast certificate was issued in 2012 and is unfortunately still in its infancy in 2014. Connection and compatibility issues are not uncommon. For this reason, in the next practical tip we will show you how to connect your television to your smartphone or tablet in the conventional way.
