Cloud storage services like OneDrive are becoming increasingly popular. Here we show you exactly what OneDrive is and what you can use it for.
OneDrive as another cloud service
With cloud storage, your data is not stored on a local data carrier, but is on the servers of the cloud providers.
- Since the files are stored on the Internet, you can also access them from anywhere. Simply log in to the OneDrive website. You will then see your available files.
- OneDrive is therefore particularly suitable for files that you always want to have up-to-date on multiple devices. The apps for Windows Phone, Android and iOS are also useful.
- However, you should not save sensitive data such as banking information in your cloud storage. As the iCloud hack showed, online storage is not completely secure. It is therefore particularly important that you choose a secure password.
- You will receive a free storage space of 15 GB when you register. You can enlarge it by referring friends. Alternatively, you can buy additional storage.
OneDrive in Windows 10
In Windows 10 OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage, is already installed by default. You will see the OneDrive icon in the bar on the left in Explorer.
- Office applications are also closely linked to OneDrive. In the "Save As" dialog as of Office 2013, you can directly save in OneDrive.
- If you are bothered by the direct integration of the cloud service in Windows 10, you can deactivate OneDrive at startup.
- It can be assumed that the linking of OneDrive in Windows 10 will provide further features with future updates.
