What is roaming? Easily explained
When it comes to making calls abroad, the term roaming is often used. We'll explain exactly what that is.
Roaming: making calls abroad
The English term "roaming" means "wandering around" and refers to mobile calls abroad.
- If you drive over the German border, you can no longer make calls with your cell phone as usual in the German network, as your mobile operator is not responsible for this.
- If you activate the roaming function on your mobile phone, you can also make calls abroad. You then use the mobile network of the partner of your mobile service provider.
- Since your mobile operator is no longer responsible, you pay more for calls, SMS and mobile data abroad. Deactivating the roaming function protects you from excessive costs on vacation.
- Within the European Union, roaming charges will probably no longer apply in a few years. Depending on the provider, you currently pay around 20 cents per minute for a call.

If you do not want to fall into the trap of costs on vacation, you should switch off the roaming function on Android and the roaming function on iOS.
