What is spam?
You keep reading about spam on the Internet, but what exactly is it? We clarify it.
Spam: a definition
- Definition: Spam is mainly unwanted messages that are sent via the Internet. However, there are several types of spam:
- E-mail: The best known and most frequently represented is spam mail. It is sent in bulk and mostly contains advertising that should tempt you to open a website or buy a product (see picture). Spam emails often also have a file attachment that is to be opened under a false pretext and then transferred a virus to the computer.
- Advertising: Advertising banners on websites are also referred to as spam. You can trigger an avalanche of pop-ups with just one click, especially on dubious websites.
- Forums: Spam in forums is older than spam mail. Since a large audience is available here, users like to post advertisements and links to websites with which you advertise or earn money in the comments of the forums. However, such comments are usually deleted.
